What is Meat Juice Anyway?
Meat left my diet for good about 2 1/2 years ago; milk and eggs shortly followed. While I am greatly proud of myself for the years that I have been followng an animal-free diet, I continuously ask myself why it took 22 years of animal-loving life to make such a choice.
Friends of my friend Kelly have children who are vegetarians. These children have made the decision on their own. I wonder why I did not step out as these kids have. ![]()
I did enjoy my mom’s baked chicken, but when it came to me cooking it - forget it! I wanted nothing to do with touching raw gooey-ness. I was disgusted by, and had to remove, every bit of fat, skin, bone, etc. And I can still vividly remember the day my older sister revealed to me that meat “juice” was in fact blood. I was mortifyed.
It seems I have always had the makings of a vegetarian in me, so why then did I not stand up as a child and ask that the bloody meat not be put on my plate?
I ask myself this question often. I suppose I simply didn’t know that it was an option. Truth be told, I liked the taste of medium-rare steak. In the end, I’ve decided to just be happy that today I have put my foot down when it comes to what goes on my plate and in my body; I have raised my voice for my animals friends; I have chosen to follow a meat-free diet.
