Vegan in Philadelphia
This morning, I made an early morning trek into Center City - Philadelphia’s creative name for the heart of it all. I tend to think of this busy part of town as being more vegetarian- and vegan-friendly than the outskirts and surrounding suburbs.
I have cut out my morning coffee, but wanted to treat myself (and prepare for the long day ahead of me) with an iced soy latte. I headed toward the Corner Bakery first: no soy milk there. I passed numerous street carts, which seemed to be where most people were getting their morning brew, but no soy milk at any of those, either. I had wanted to support a smaller business, but now I was just in search of Starbucks. I passed people with Dunkin’ Donuts cups, but knew that none of their stores stock soy milk.
Then I saw it - a woman turning the corner with a Starbucks cup. I quickly turned to head in the direction from which she came. There was another Starbucks cup, and another, and finally … somewhere that I could get an iced soy latte.
It shouldn’t be this hard in a large metropolitan area to get a vegan coffee drink!
Lunch, at least, was much easier to find. Before catching a train to work, I grabbed a fresh fruit smoothie and a marinated tofu salad from vendors down in the train station. It was an exciting lunch because I was able to order two items from two different places without making a single stipulation. I ordered right off the menu!
My smoothie was a blend of ice, raspberries, banana, and pineapple. The salad was lettuce tossed with chickpeas, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes, with slices of marinated tofu and eggplant.
So, at least food-wise, the Center City district of Philadelphia is vegan-friendly. Now, about that soy milk …

I am also vegan in Philadelphia, and although it is not the veg-friendliest city in the world, it does well for itself. I do agree with the soy milk issue though.. I can only get coffee drinks (conveniently) at Starbucks as well!
