“Remember to Spay and Neuter Your Pets.” (Bob Barker)

by

bob-barker.jpgBy now you have probably heard that Bob Barker, host of “The Price is Right” has retired. Seemingly in his prime, at the age of 83, Barker jokes that he is “going into bodybuilding, and eventually become governor of the state of California” now that he has stepped down from the show “while [he is] still young.”

Joking aside, however, you have to remember Bobby not only as the ever-white haired daytime host, but also an animal activist and vegetarian. Concluding each episode with: “Remember to spay and neuter your pets!”

Barker credits his healthy, meat-free diet with keeping him up and running for so long: “I eat properly, and I exercise. I’m a vegetarian. … I became a vegetarian out of concern for animals, but I wasn’t a vegetarian long before I realized there’s something to that. I don’t think I would have worked for the past five years probably were it not for my vegetarian diet.”

So what’s the man up to with no wheel to command contestants to spin? Not sitting idly by, that’s for sure! “I’m working right now with a group to get Ruby, an elephant in the Los Angeles Zoo, out of the zoo and get her up to a sanctuary near Sacramento,” he says. “[And I'm] working with another group to get an elephant named Maggie out of the Anchorage Zoo and get her into a sanctuary. To put it mildly, I’m busy, so far as animals are concerned. And I will be busier.”
