Newsweek: My Turn: “Saving My Cat: Why No Price Was Too High”
My roommate thinks pushing my buttons on topics that I am passionate about is equivalent to having a thought-provoking conversation. So when he came home excited to tell me of a Newsweek article that he thought would interest me, I was surprised that he was right!
The man who wrote the article spent $11,000 to save his cat and declares that “no price was too high.” I, at first, scoffed. There has to be a point when you say “that’s too much money.” So my roommate challenged me: “Go ahead then, set your price limit for saving your cats.”
Who knew the guy that one night insists on endlessly threatening to shave, sell, or elsewise harass my babies, could offer up such a stimulating response?

It is not exactly a monetary price, but it is a price that is put on there livelihood. My last cat had to have a leg amputated, but she lived another 2 years and was happy and healthy otherwise, so the 2000 dollars was worth the effort.

That’s my mom’s sentiment exactly … if it only extends the life for a few months and sets you back more than you can afford perhaps it’s a no-go. But, if you can afford it, and the vet says it will help your cat live at least another 2 years, go for it!
Nice comment Sparky!

I was in such a predicament a few years ago. My cat had kidney disease. She was always a scrawny looking cat and was a real trooper despite always having something wrong with her. But one day she developed sores in her mouth and stopped eating. She had been urinating all over the house. When i took her to the vet, they gave me little options. I could spend a lot of money putting her on dialysis which may not work in the end, or I could have her put to sleep. I loved my cat, but when i looked at her, saw her suffering, i knew i couldn’t put her through anymore. I was a complete and utter wreck but I knew it was the right thing to do. But believe me, if there was any certainty that something could have saved her, i would have spent whatever it cost.
