Found: A Restaurant that Cooks Their Fries Separate from Their Meat!
I have finally found a restaurant that does not cook their french fries with their chicken fingers, fish sandwiches, or whatever other unhealthy slabs of meat they choose to deep fry!
I hunted long and hard, all across Philadelphia and even a few establishments in neighboring states. Every time I eat at a restaurant, cafe, or any other food type place, I ask: “Do you cook your fries in the same oil as your meat?” After a few minutes of confusion, explanation, rewording, and the occasional visual demonstration, I usually get the same response: “Oh, yea. They go in the same fryer.”
But not Saturday. No, when I asked Saturday I got a scoff of disbelief: “Of course not! They are cooked separately.”
So what was this fantastic, vegan-friendly, super affordable chain? ‘Twas IKEA!
That’s right … IKEA is the first place that I have found in Philly that respects not only vegans, but also people with food allergies.
For my lunch break from shopping for shelves, I had a plate of french fries ($2) and a vegetarian wrap ($3). The wrap included two kinds of bean sprouts, cucumber slices, red peppers, and more veggies on a spinach wrap with a very light hint of poppyseed dressing. I was beyond impressed that not only was I able to order a vegan lunch without making any special requests, but that it only cost me $5. Even the way that it was folded - in a cone - was impressive. My mom and roommate both grabbed and enjoyed a veggie wrap, too.
So next time somebody asks me where I want to go out to eat, you better believe that I am going to say IKEA!
