Back to the Basics
Before getting to juicy with the details of a lifestyle that lacks meat, I feel it important to start with some basic definitions of terms commonly thrown around when speaking about vegetarianism. Let’s make sure we all understand what the words mean:
Vegetarian - person who chooses to exclude animal flesh from his diet
Vegan - person who excludes ALL animal food, ingredients, fibers, etc. from her diet, clothing, and all other products
Veg-friendly - has an understanding of the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, diet, and philosophy
Lacto-ovo vegetarian - person who follows a vegetarian diet; does consume milk and eggs
Veg*n - term used to refer to both vegetarian and vegan
Now you know. But please note, just because denoting lacto or ovo or both before vegetarian means that one chooses to consume milk (lacto) and/or eggs (ovo), stating simply vegetarian is not synonymous with vegan. When a person says they are vegetarian, chances are they do eat some animal products aside from meat (e.g. cheese). Sound smart and ask them if they are lacto-ovo!
