As All-American as Baseball and VEGGIE Hot Dogs
It’s baseball season again and that means one thing in Philadelphia … but I wouldn’t really know what that one thing is since I am not really a baseball fan. I am, however, a fan of the atmosphere of being at a sporting event. The cheering, the crowd (unless it’s a drunk, angry Eagles’ crowd!), the food. Wait a minute! The food? How is a vegetarian, or worse a vegan, supposed to eat anything at a stadium? Don’t they just serve beer and hot dogs?
Never fear my meat-avoiding sport fans, the times they are a-changing. PETA releases an annual list of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks, and while we await the 2007 roster, let’s look at what healthy, veggie bites you might find at your local arena.
Citizens Bank Park, where the Philadelphia Phillies call home, ranked number seven last year, so I checked in with their Aramark concessions offerings to see how they might fair this year. Here’s what I found:
*Two different kinds of veggie steaks: one with fake meat, one with vegetables and cheese
*A vegetarian wrap or hoagie with roasted eggplant, broccoli rabe, and red peppers, and provolone cheese
*Classic PB&J
*Vegan hot dog - available for $1 on one of Citizens Bank Park’s seven “dollar dog days”
*Plenty of pizza offerings including a tomato pie which is cheeseless
*Vegetarian - but not vegan - desserts such as ice cream, water ice, and funnel cakes
*Vegan snacks - nacho chips and salsa, Super Pretzels, peanuts; Vegetarian snacks - nachos with cheese, fresh baked pretzels, french fries, popcorn
*Flame-grilled veggie burgers
*Garden salads
*Hoagie, hold-the-meat
Other Ballparks boast some of these items above, as well as: fruit cups, baked potatoes, pierogies, smoothies, paninis, veggie burritos, portobello burgers, corn on the cob, pasta dishes, and more.
I think I may have to have someone take me out to the ball game just so I can try some of these Veggie delights! See what you can find when you go watch the men in tight pants run the bases. Consider it a challenge!
…And I will be sure to let you know when PETA announces this year’s top 10. Will your local stadium make the cut?

Who knew that you could eat healthily(is that a word?) at the ball park! Can’t wait to hear how the baked tofu is. By the by, what do you know about he benefits of coconut oil?
