One Celeb + Two Friends = Three Very Sexy Green Girls

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

In addition to making myself into a healthier version of the same great me, I have also been working hard to follow another new trend for this new year: I have been turning my laptop off every night.

That’s right, this earth-loving modern-day hippie used to leave her laptop on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

I’ve been inspired to take on this - and a few other little green habits here and there - by a new favorite Web site: Green Is Sexy.

Take a gander around the pages of the eco-conscious peek inside the mind of three girlfriends - shown here, from left: Rachel, Didi, Megan. You may just recognize one of these lovely ladies of an unplugging mindset!

Presidential Candidates: Friends or Foes of the Animals?

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Aren’t presidential election years fun? The name calling. The semi-legitimate debating taking up precious reality TV time. The need for every Joe on the corner to call into question your moral stances, while proclaiming why his - and his candidate’s - are better.
Celery Clinton 2008: Road to the Greenhouse
And, most of all, being forced to narrow your choices for nation ruler and decision maker down to one person, when you likely only agree with him (or her!) on 50-60 percent of the issues.

Doug, a vegetarian who writes about current events, found a good online quiz that ranks your views and opinions in comparison with the candidates. It is one of the best of it’s kind that I have seen, though it still doesn’t include animal rights. It had me pegged as a liberal-leaning populist, agreeing most with Barack Obama and second with John McCain (though no more than 50 percent with either).

mike_huckabee.jpg I can guess Mr. Mike Huckabee’s feelings towards animals and their rights - this picture here is of him taking a hunting breaking in Iowa while on the campaign trail.

From there, the National Shooting Sports Foundation was kind enough to lay out each candidate’s belief on hunting (though I’m sure that I am not their intended audience).

* Huckabee: “I’m a hunter, I have been my whole life.”

* Mitt Romney: Even though his statement was later deemed not 100 percent true, he did at one point say, “I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life.”

Other animal rights issues, etc.:

* Romney: During a 1983 family vacation, reportedly strapped the pet dog to the roof of the car - because he was upset - for the entire 12-hour drive.

* Obama: He has sponsored pro-horse-life bills, and has promised to be a president for the animals as well as the people.

That’s all that I see so far. If you know anything else - let us know! Leave a comment, or e-mail LivingWithoutMeat at Gmail dot com.

Can a Cow Care?: Get Your Answer in One Picture

Friday, February 1st, 2008

I went back and forth, weighing whether I would want to be this girl or an onlooker. I finally decided that I want her to be my daughter (or my future daughter to be just like her).

This photo is from KCzarzasty’s Flickr - online, shared photography album. He has some great shots in a range of categories, but the farms and livestock album is not to be missed by animal lovers.

Here is the photographer’s own explanation of this peaceful moment that speaks wonders to the human-animal bond, and the capacity for a cow to feel: “While visiting the Goshen Agricultural Fair my wife brought this picture to my attention. So overwhelmed by everything going on I would have missed this picture of this young girl and her cow taking an afternoon nap.”

From Negative Nancy to Positive Polly

Friday, February 1st, 2008

The first month of 2008 has officially ended. I don’t tend to make New Year’s resolutions exactly, because then you just feel like a loser if you get to busy. Around the office yesterday, as January was closing out, chatter was about how disappointed people were with everything that they didn’t accomplish during the month.

How pessimistic!

It’s true, I tend to get teased for being a smiling, bubbly, sometimes sickeningly, optimistic person, but I think this helps me to feel more accomplished over the little things in life. Here are a few things that I would like to suggest to the Negative Nancys:funny_pictures_resolution_cats_treadmill.jpg

* Make excuses. I kid you not, but make sure they are legit. You didn’t get to the gym as often as you had hoped this week? Why not? Look at what you did instead. Did you spend time cooking healthy meals, rather than eating quick take-out? Did you get eight hours of sleep at night when you usually only get five? Health isn’t just about the gym.

* Brag. Show off. Don’t be an annoying snot or anything, but doesn’t it feel good when someone else acknowledges that you are doing well. Call your mom and tell her that you just got back from a workout class that was fun. E-mail your best friend when you lose five pounds. Leave a comment here, telling me about your success - I will always respond positively and cheer you on!

* Be obsessive. Write down every time that you exercise. Okay, don’t get so into this one if you have a history of OCD or an eating disorder (my legal-ish disclaimer), but give yourself the credit that you deserve. Did you walk for 15 minutes during your break from work? Log it in! That way, when you think back on your fitness for the week, instead of “Aw man, I didn’t go to the gym once,” you’ll be thinking “Wow, a 15 minute walk each day really adds up!”

This was NOT my Project Blog entry, but I am still in the running! Will you vote for me? Please?
